Kill spiders often for meat and if you find a spider base with three segments, destroy it and plant it closer to your base for meat/web. Wear armor and pick cactus in the desert very good source of year long veggies. Run to beefalo when you are attacked by hounds (eventually learn how to fight them off with traps and kiting). I would set up near the middle of the map a few days before winter. Try to find the pig king, the swamp, some beefalo, the desert and a cave entrance. Make sure you always have a torch in your inventory when it starts to get dark with enough materials to make a second torch. That said walk the perimeter of the map for the first few days. I personally found it fun to only look stuff up after I died and dying in each season is a right of passage imo. The only real advice is keep moving and keep learning. Half the fun is dying and trying better next time. This will greatly depend on what resources are close to each other, or on the route to pig king / etc. Journey 2 is killing spiders in a forest near the pig king for silk and monster meat, then using some of the meat to recruit pigs to help you chop wood. ![]() For example: journey 1 is shaving beefalo, gathering grass, and maybe hunting one or two for Meat. Plan your journeys out so that you can hopefully attend to multiple needs at once. ![]() ![]() The second half of autumn should be dedicated to making another 2-3 journeys across the map to gather other resources you didn't get the first time (silk, beefalo wool, pig skin if you found pig heads on sticks), and plants you want to relocate to your base (grass, twigs, a few berry bushes). Will arrive at your base location with a firepit and (hopefully!) an alchemy engine ready to place, tree seeds ready to plant, and full stacks of most other resources to help you craft other structures you need.Can choose a base location based on this information.The end result of this is that about halfway through autumn you: Keep moving around the map, bringing you into new areas that are untouched is what will keep you fed. But the key thing is you really only want two slots of your inventory dedicated to carrying food - seeds and one other thing. Carrots are also an option and will last longer, but they don't respawn - so I try to rely on berries for food and leave carrots as emergency rations for later trips. Carry only 9-12 juicy berries max, as they rot faster. I usually stock up on around 10-15 berries and keep moving (more than that and they rot before you can use them). Food: Keep a stack of seeds in your inventory, and otherwise do not carry a variety of food.A fire pit for sure, and if your first find of gold is somewhere it is plentiful (like a rocky biome), then take the time to pre-craft an alchemy engine as well. Prototyping: in order to arrive at your base destination with as many resources you can carry, you will want to prototype (but not place!) several structures. ![]() If you come across a bee biome that is chock full of flowers, I will try to stock up on a full stack of petals, with the intention of letting them turn into rot. I also get 8 reeds and 20+ pine tree seeds. I aim for one full stack of all basic materials: grass, twigs, flint, wood, stone, and gold. During this exploration phase, stock up on resources as you come across them.Other people follow roads, and take a more random approach. I walk around the edges, which is thorough but takes slightly longer. Do it if you have extra time, but don't focus on it. You really don't need the prestihatitator in.
